Bet Types: Singles, Accumulators, Handicaps and Systems
The same match can be bet in many shapes, and the shape matters as much as the selection. Some bet types keep the bookmaker's margin small; others multiply it. This guide explains the main bet types and what each does to your chances. The bet types and rules available in any sportsbook, including Dewi888's if your account has one, are set by the operator.
Single bets
A single is one selection on one market: it wins or loses on its own. Singles carry the bookmaker's margin once, which makes them the most transparent bet type and the easiest to evaluate. If you are learning, use singles only and record every one.
Accumulator bets (parlays)
An accumulator combines several selections into one bet; all must win for it to pay. The odds multiply, so the potential return is large — but so does the margin. Four selections, each with a five percent margin, carry roughly twenty percent of margin combined. That is why accumulators lose far more often than their odds suggest, and why bookmakers promote them with acca boosts. A small stake on a short accumulator can be fun; a large one is expensive entertainment.
Handicap and over/under markets
A handicap gives one side a head start or a deficit to balance an uneven match. European handicaps use whole goals and keep a draw option; Asian handicaps use half and quarter lines to remove the draw or split the stake. Over/under markets ask whether the total — goals, points, games — will be above or below a line. Both turn a one-sided match into a closer proposition, often with a lower margin than the match result.
System bets
A system bet is a set of smaller accumulators built from your selections. A "2 from 3" system, for example, places three doubles on three selections; two winners are enough for a return. Systems soften the all-or-nothing nature of accumulators but cost several stakes at once. Read the bet slip's total stake before confirming.
Bet builders and same-game combinations
Many sportsbooks let you combine several markets from the same match — a winner, a total and a scorer — into one bet. These bet builders look like accumulators but the selections are linked: a team that scores often also tends to win. Bookmakers price that link in, usually with a generous margin. Treat them as entertainment bets with small stakes rather than as value.
Choosing your format
| Bet type | Wins when | Margin effect | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | The one selection wins | Carried once | Learning, considered bets |
| Accumulator / parlay | Every selection wins | Multiplied | Small stakes for fun |
| Handicap | The adjusted result wins | Often lower | Uneven matches |
| Over/under | The total clears the line | Often lower | Readers of pace and scoring |
| System | Enough selections win | Spread over several bets | Softening accumulator risk |
